Ok, so when we get to the ‘shoulder season’ in our climate here in coastal Florida, it means that the Air Conditioners start to cycle off because the weather is cooling down. As the weather cools, the less A/C we use, the happier we are with our utility bills! However, when we run less air we also do less moisture removal (A.K.A. dehumidification) with the Air Conditioner, so our indoor conditioned space will get a little more humid. The HVAC system in a home usually does about 75% cooling work & about 25% dehumidifying work, so when we get to a season that is not a full-blown cooling season, we use less A/C due to the weather, and we reduce the amount of moisture removed from our indoor air. I teach you all this so that you know what a shoulder season is; it’s the adjacent season to full on cooling season, fall and early spring; and here in our area this can reach into the middle of winter, Who has had to run their A/C on Christmas or New year’s or Super Bowl Sunday due to warm temperatures or humid sticky conditions? I have!

The next question we always get is “ what do we do about it”?
This is important because it’s not what you would think. If you continue to run your A/C, you may get comfort, but there is a very good chance that you might be ‘over-cooling’ your home… many contractors and all the manufacturers would suggest buying an HVAC system that has a humidistat incorporated into the equipment. As a specialist and duct guy, I have seen, over the years, what happens when you over-cool … MOLD! This is not a very good option, and also this mold is an “unintended consequence” for having a humidistat or a high efficiency, high SEER dehumidifying A/C unit. The best you’re going to get is a 70% / 30% split between cooling and moisture removal!

• A whole-house dehumidifier
• This is perhaps the best solution for an uncomfortable, Unhealthy Home!

A De-Hue needs to be installed in connection with your existing duct system & run independent of the A/C system, then you don’t have to run the air when the weather is favorable, just let the dehumidifier do the work!

A football favorite…

 I like to use Vigo Yellow Saffron rice as a base for my dirty rice since the flavor is so much better. Use the large family size (4 cups water) for a party size batch of rice…

Then just throw in the kitchen sink; add the following; some or all of it or whatever you have in the fridge or in the window sill!!   Brown a 1lb chub of pork sausage, add onion, celery, a finely chopped jalapeno, & bell pepper. I add a bit of fresh grated ginger; and some finely minced garlic & finely diced carrots. THEN, to the rice, add the water/broth & some frozen green peas OR maybe some frozen kernel corn or both… Enjoy

So far so good, for the storm season & the football season! These are the things I seem to focus on during the fall, that, and the weather finally cooling down; it seems to be taking its time this year, but ‘Praise the Lord’ that the tropics have been quiet. Later this month, the long grind of Hockey & Basketball will begin, at least for the pro level, hard to believe they start now & hoist those trophies in June. Dang, baseball will start back before we see who is in the final running for Lord Stanley’s Cup. 

what we all needed, a little ‘revival’ to get in-tune with mother nature going into our cool season; My music recommendation is Seth Walker, he has a new album out this year and it is great (“album or record”, is a generic term the musicians use, since they are always changing music delivery format but I love the ‘old-school’ idea of an album; $15 cash at the festival, a good collection of songs and a tangible thing in your hand.  Hey, I’m a Spotify user also, choose your own delivery of tunes, but get some new music and have some gratitude for the artists… after all, it is Gratitude month!!

 I’m waiting to see how November shakes out before crowing about my

beloved Denver Broncos, but it’s looking good so far this season.

As we approach the holidays & Thanksgiving, be sure to give thanks to your friends & family because life is short & it’s not the same when they are away, not included, or gone from this life.
